DIBRUGAR: The Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA) on Monday petitioned the Dibrugarh Factory Inspector’s Office for compensation for 24-year-old Maina Nayak who was injured at the Lapetakatta tea factory.

ATTSA activists holding placards and banners swarmed the office of the Chief Inspector of Factories for an hour demanding compensation for tea worker Maina Nayak.

They waved slogans against the BJP government and the management of the Lapetakatta tea factory.

Lakhindra Kurmi, Dibrugarh, Secretary of ATTSA said, “As an immediate relief, Rs 13 lakh should be granted to Maina Nayak by the management of Lapetkatta tea factory owned by Laxmi Tea company. The Labor Department ordered the management of the tea company to provide Rs 13 lakh to Maina Nayak as an immediate relief, but it seems that the management is paying no attention to the direction of the Labor Department.

“Labour Welfare Minister Sanjay Kishan has failed miserably as Assam’s Labor Minister. He didn’t have the courage to raise his voice against wrongdoing. It was clear that the management of Laptaketta tea did not care about the direction of the government. Due to the negligence of the tea management, the unfortunate incident happened,” Kurmi said.

On July 19, Maina Nayak, a tea worker, was seriously injured while working at the Lapetkatta tea factory in Dibrugarh when her hair got caught in the CTC (cut, tear, curl) machine.

Assam’s Labor Welfare Department had suspended Chief Inspector of Factories Dinesh Chandra Roy for neglect of duty.

Maina Nayak is undergoing treatment at GMCH Guwahati and doctors are constantly monitoring her condition.

“We are also demanding compensation of Rs 20 lakh and permanent employment at Lapetkatta tea estate for Maina Nayak. According to the Plantation Labor Act 1951, worker safety criteria shall be fully enforced in all tea estates and factories producing purchased leaves in Assam,” said Bimal Bagh, District Chairman of Assam. ‘ATTSA.

The student body has sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on this.
