Another day, another round of President Biden’s executive orders sought to undo the conservative policies of the Trump era. Today, Biden signed two ordinances expanding access to the Affordable Care Act and revoking restrictions on reproductive rights.

The first order reopens the open enrollment period from Feb. 15 to May 15, giving Americans in need of health insurance three months to sign up for a plan on the Healthcare.gov Marketplace. He also orders federal agencies to reconsider policies that have made it harder to access health care, many of which Trump has instituted.

The Second Order repeals Mexico City’s policy, also known as the Global Gag Rule, which prevents overseas family planning groups that receive U.S. assistance from performing, facilitating, or discuss abortions. As Vox explains, every Republican president since Ronald Reagan has instituted this rule, and every Democratic president has repealed it. Trump’s version went further, unless all foreign organization that receives aid from the United States – not just family planning organizations – to discuss abortion.

These actions, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at a press conference this afternoon, “build on the actions the president has taken to put fairness at the heart of the response. of its administration to COVID-19 “.
