Most employees in Indiana’s executive branch will receive pay increases of around 5% in the new year, Gov. Eric Holcomb said Thursday.

In a message to employees, a copy of which was obtained by IndyStar, Holcomb acknowledged the “unprecedented” workforce challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve made adjustments and the Indiana state workforce has done a great job adjusting and continuing to do the job,” Holcomb’s post read. “But it has become clear that we need to take steps to make our public compensation more competitive.”

Eligible employees will see the salary adjustment reflected on their January 19 paycheck, Holcomb said. Most full-time executive branch employees will receive an initial salary increase of $ 1,300, followed by a 2.5% increase.

Since the average increase is around 5% for full-time employees, the state will also extend the 5% increases to part-time, intermittent and seasonal employees, according to Holcomb’s post.

This is the first general wage adjustment for government employees in over a decade.

Following salary increases, employees are entitled to one-off bonuses, to be paid in early March, following annual performance reviews. Employees who receive a “successful” rating will receive $ 500, those who “exceed expectations” will receive $ 1,000 and those classified as “exemplary” will receive $ 1,500.
