OSWEGO – Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang announced Monday, June 14, that six additional residents have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past three days. This brings the cumulative total number of positive cases since the county began monitoring COVID-19 in March 2020 to 8,110.
There was one new case on Saturday, no new cases on Sunday and five new cases reported today. There are currently 28 active positive cases.
“We are also sad to report that we lost another resident to COVID-19 over the past weekend,” Huang said. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of this patient.”
“Even though our seven-day accumulated daily case count remains low, it shows us that the virus still poses a serious threat to vulnerable members of our community,” Huang said. “We need to increase our vaccination rates to protect our communities. I urge vaccine-eligible residents to get immunized now. The vaccines are incredibly effective, safe, and widely available now. “

The Department of Health continues to work with communities across the county to organize immunization clinics. Appointments are currently available for people aged 18 and over for the Janssen / Johnson & Johnson vaccine. It will be administered at G. Ray Bodley High School, 6 William Gillard Dr., Fulton on Wednesday June 16 from 4 p.m. and at the Richland Fire Department, 30 Phillips St., Richland on Saturday June 19 between 9 and 11h00

Be sure to check if a clinic appears to have no appointments available. Appointments may become available if other people cancel or reschedule theirs, or if more vaccines become available.

Everyone who attends an Oswego County Health Department vaccination clinic must have proof of age to receive their vaccine. Proof of age can be a driver’s license, birth certificate, passport or school ID card. People without an appointment and without proof of age will not be vaccinated.
The Pfizer vaccine is currently the only vaccine approved for people 12 years of age and older. Both Moderna and Janssen / Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only approved for people 18 years of age and older. The Oswego County Health Department noticed that some people were hesitant to sign up for the COVID-19 vaccine because they did not have health insurance.
“I want to reassure residents that the vaccine is free,” said public health nurse supervisor Jodi Martin, of the preventive services division of the health department. “The small administrative costs that are billed to health insurance are not billed to individuals. No one will be refused for lack of health insurance or inability to pay the costs. All you need is an appointment and proof of age. Go online to our vaccination page or call the hotline to make an appointment and get vaccinated today.
Free transportation is provided for residents to COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites through a partnership between Oswego County and Oswego County Opportunities, Inc. Rides are available between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Call 315-598-1514 to plan a trip in advance.
President Weatherup reminds residents that the virus is still active and people should assume they can be exposed to COVID-19 wherever they go. “With the lifting of restrictions, I urge residents to protect themselves in public spaces, especially if they are not vaccinated,” he said. “Now is not the time to let our guard down and abandon security practices. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, now is the time to get vaccinated.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, chills, repeated tremors with chills, gastrointestinal illnesses, and further loss of taste or smell.
