OSWEGO – Oswego County Director of Public Health, Jiancheng Huang, announced Tuesday, June 15, that one additional resident has tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the cumulative total number of positive cases since the county began monitoring COVID-19 in March 2020 to 8,111. There are currently 23 active positive cases.

“Our seven-day accumulated daily case count remains low, and we are still in the ‘moderate’ community transmission group according to the CDC,” Huang said. “We must continue to increase our vaccination rates to better protect our communities. I urge those who are eligible for the vaccine to get vaccinated now. Vaccines are safe, effective and widely available now. They’re free and you don’t need health insurance to get one.

“As we continue to move forward, we will reduce the frequency of our COVID-19 reports,” he added. “Instead of publishing a daily report on weekdays, we will send a weekly report on Monday afternoon, starting next Monday, June 21. This will allow health and other services to focus their resources on vaccination clinics and other COVID-19 recovery activities. ”

This report is current as of 3 p.m. June 15.

The Oswego County Health Department has noticed that some people are hesitant to enroll in the COVID-19 vaccine because they don’t have health insurance.

“I want to reassure residents that there is no charge for the vaccine,” said public health nurse officer Jodi Martin, of the health department’s preventive services division. “The minimal administrative costs that are charged to health insurance are not charged to individuals. No one will be turned away for lack of health insurance or inability to pay the fees. All you need is an appointment and proof of age. President Weatherup reminds residents that the virus is still active and people should assume they may be exposed to COVID-19 wherever they go. “With the lifting of restrictions, I urge residents to protect themselves in public spaces, especially if they are not vaccinated,” he said. “Now is not the time to let our guard down and abandon safety practices. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, now is the time to get vaccinated.
