Statement from President Joe Biden on historic low uninsurance rate

Every American deserves the peace of mind that comes with access to affordable, quality health care. No one should worry about whether they can pay their doctor or choose between paying rent and producing a prescription. Today, we are closer than ever to making this principle a reality. The lowest percentage of Americans are uninsured today – eight percent – in history.

This progress did not happen by chance. More than 35 million Americans are enrolled in Affordable Care Act coverage — the highest total ever. This includes more than 21 million people enrolled in the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, coverage that is denied to nearly four million Americans who live in states that have refused to expand Medicaid. And, since my administration began, an additional 5 million people have gained health insurance coverage — largely thanks to improvements to the ACA in the U.S. bailout.

When I ran for office, I said we needed to protect and strengthen the Affordable Care Act. The Cut Inflation Act will do just that – it will save an average of $800 a year in health insurance premiums for 13 million Americans and prevent 3 million Americans from no longer be insured. I urge Congress to quickly pass this legislation to reduce health care costs and make health insurance coverage more accessible to families across the country.
